Stop Sciatica Now - Sciatica Treatment

spinal stenosis

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a set of symptoms caused by an irritation or compression of one of five nerve roots in the lower back or of the sciatic nerve itself. Sciatica sufferers will typically experience pain in one or more of the following areas:

  1. Aching in the buttock and thigh area

  2. Tingling or numbness in the leg

  3. Shooting pains up through the lower back

The majority of sciatica cases can be attributed to one of four primary causes:

  1. Piriformis syndrome - Created when pressure is placed on the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle. This is the most common cause of sciatic pain.

  2. Spinal disc herniation - Caused by a spinal disc protruding out from between the vertebrae and pressing on one of the sciatic nerve roots.

  3. Spinal stenosis - A condition where the spinal canal narrows and compresses the spinal cord.

  4. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction - Dysfunction in the sacroiliac joint that is often attributed to poor postural habits.

Common Sciatica Treatment

There are a wide range of treatments available including medication therapies (drugs) and invasive surgery. While these treatments can be effective, and are sometimes necessary, they are typically over-prescribed by doctors.

In many cases it is preferable to try alternative sciatica treatments. Such treatments typically take a more holistic approach to back and muscle health, and they help to avoid the side effects and long recovery periods of surgical procedures.

Stop Sciatica Now

Pamela Kihm has produced a wonderful book called Stop Sciatica Now that aims to provide sciatica treatment without the need for drugs or surgery.

The foundation for the book is the Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education, a highly regarded movement education methodology taught by thousands of practitioners all over the world. It is reassuring to see that the book has a solid medical foundation since many alternative treatment books are written by non-professionals, based purely on how they treated their own conditions.

Through the book, sciatica sufferers can learn how gentle exercises and minor changes in body positioning can be effective treatments and can eliminate sciatic pain.

Content Overview

The first three chapters of the book describe, in easy to understand language, the causes of sciatic pain and how your posture and movement have a significant impact on your back health and severity of the pain you experience during bouts of sciatica.

The remaining seven chapters of the book provide very detailed explanations and step-by-step guides on how to maintain good posture in your everyday activities, as well as providing an array of gentle, effective exercises that give immediate back relief.

Recommendation for Sciatica Sufferers

Stop Sciatica Now is highly practical, providing detailed how-tos on everyday activities such as walking up stairs, lifting heavy loads and sitting at a desk in the office. Following these how-tos can be an effective method of treatment for sciatica without the need for invasive surgery or strong medication.

Many readers have experienced great results from this book. There are lots of encouraging testimonials on the website describing how the book was a vital part of their own sciatica treatment.

This book is well written and has a strong medical foundation. I strongly recommend sciatica suffers take a look at Stop Sciatica Now.

My rating: Highly Recommended.
